The valve train controls gas exchange and directly governs compression, starting and power. Valve clearances drift with running hours, so periodic adjustment is a maintenance task rather than a repair — and neglecting it burns valves.
Seal the combustion chamber. Burnt or receded valves cause hard starting and misfire.
Locate and seal the valve; worn guides admit oil and cause smoke.
Close the valve and hold it. Weak springs cause valve float at speed.
Transmit cam motion to the valve. A bent pushrod usually follows over-fuelling or a hydraulic lock.
