The exhaust system carries gas safely away and controls noise. On generator installations it is also a safety system: a leaking exhaust inside a plant room is a carbon monoxide hazard, not merely a nuisance.
Graded by attenuation. Grade is selected from the site — a residential or hospital installation needs more than an industrial one.
Isolate engine movement from fixed pipework. Omitting or over-stretching one cracks the manifold.
Collect gas from the ports; cracking follows thermal cycling and overloading.
Routed to discharge clear of air intakes and occupied areas; lagging protects personnel and reduces plant-room heat.
Keep water out of the system on outdoor terminations.
