The sensors and switchgear around the engine tell the controller what is happening and shut the set down before damage occurs. When these fail the set often stops for no apparent reason, or worse, fails to stop when it should.
Provide the shutdown that protects the bearings. A faulty sender causes spurious low-pressure shutdowns — never bypass one to keep a set running.
Drive gauges, alarms and high-temperature shutdown.
Read flywheel teeth for speed and crank detection. Gap setting is critical; too far and the set will not detect crank.
Crank the engine. Slow cranking is more often batteries and cabling than the motor itself.
Keep starting batteries charged while running. A failed charge alternator is a common reason a standby set is flat when finally needed.
Switch and protect control and power circuits.
Carry it all. Corroded connectors cause intermittent faults that are far harder to trace than outright failures.
