Turbochargers raise output by forcing more air into the cylinders. They spin at very high speed on a thin oil film, so almost every turbo failure traces back to oil supply, oil quality or ingested debris rather than the turbo itself. Replacing one without finding the cause usually destroys the replacement.

Bearings, seals and centre housing rotating assemblies for rebuilding a serviceable casing.
A restricted feed line starves the bearing; a blocked drain pressurises the housing and pushes oil past the seals.
Limit boost pressure. A stuck wastegate gives either overboost or a marked loss of power.
Cool the compressed charge; leaks here show as smoke and lost power.
A split hose downstream of the filter admits unfiltered air straight into the engine.
