An array is sized by where the sun is and how hot the modules get, not by the watts printed on them. Nakuru County sits at 0.3°S, which fixes the tilt and the direction the array must face, and its design ambient decides how much of the nameplate survives a hot afternoon.
Where the sun is decides the geometry. Nakuru County lies at 0.3°S, so a fixed array here wants about 10° of tilt and, being within half a degree of the equator, gains almost nothing from facing north rather than south. Tilt it for rain run-off and cleaning access instead — that is worth more here than chasing the last percent of yield. A 10° floor is applied regardless, because a panel flatter than that stops shedding dust when it rains, and soiling costs more yield in most of Kenya than tilt optimisation returns.
Heat is the other half of the sizing. Modules are tested at 25 °C cell temperature, and a panel in still air runs well above ambient — around +25 °C at the cell is the usual working assumption. With a design ambient of 29.2 °C at Nakuru that puts cells near 54.2 °C, and at roughly 0.35%/°C the array gives up about 10% against its nameplate on exactly the bright, hot afternoons it was sized for. Mounting height and rear ventilation recover a real part of that; inverter placement matters for the same reason.
Moderately warm. At 29.2 °C design ambient the thermal penalty is modest — roughly 1.7% — and standard radiator packages have margin in hand. What deserves attention instead is the gap between the 25.2 °C typical day and the 31.5 °C peak: an installation sized for the average will be the one that trips on the hottest afternoon of the year, which is usually also the afternoon you most needed it.
What this does to a solar array. PV modules lose output as they heat up — roughly 0.3–0.4% per °C above their 25 °C test condition, and a panel in still air runs well above ambient. With 29.2 °C design ambient at Nakuru, array sizing based on nameplate watts will overpromise on exactly the bright, hot afternoons you sized it for. Mounting height and rear ventilation are not cosmetic details here; they recover real yield. Inverters derate on their own heat too, which is why enclosure placement matters as much as inverter brand.
Load profile. Nakuru is one of Kenya's largest concentrations of demand, and the work here skews to commercial and institutional sites where the question is rarely a single set — it is synchronising, load-shedding priority and how gracefully the installation degrades when one machine is out for service.
Getting there. Nakuru lies about 145 km north-west of our Embakasi, Nairobi workshop in a straight line — road distance is longer. Our mobile workshop covers all 47 counties, so this is comfortably within routine call-out range for service and breakdown attendance.
How to read these figures. Altitude and temperature are for Nakuru, the Nakuru County headquarters — counties span wide ranges, so these are county reference points, not your site values. The figures derived from them are planning indications, not a substitute for a site survey and measured readings. Elevation: GeoNames, via the Open-Meteo Geocoding API. Temperature: Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis, 2025 daily maxima. Both CC BY 4.0, retrieved 2026-08-08.
Commissioning in the order that prevents rework. Most of the failures we are called back to fix are decisions made — or skipped — in these first phases.
Worked to: IEC 61730 / IEC 61215 — module safety and design qualification · IEC 62109 — power converter safety · IEC 62116 — anti-islanding test procedure
We have not yet published a project in this discipline, and we are not going to dress up work in another one as if we had. What follows is documented power work for named clients — including one in Nakuru, so you can judge the standard, the reporting and the people. The same engineers do this work.
