Solar Installation in Vihiga: what the site conditions change

An array is sized by where the sun is and how hot the modules get, not by the watts printed on them. Vihiga County sits at 0.1°N, which fixes the tilt and the direction the array must face, and its design ambient decides how much of the nameplate survives a hot afternoon.

Reference altitude
1,628 m
at Mbale
Design ambient
31 °C
hotter than 95% of 2025 days
Optimal fixed tilt
10°
from latitude, floored at 10° for dust shedding
Array must face
N or S
0.1°N of the equator

Where the sun is decides the geometry. Vihiga County lies at 0.1°N, so a fixed array here wants about 10° of tilt and, being within half a degree of the equator, gains almost nothing from facing north rather than south. Tilt it for rain run-off and cleaning access instead — that is worth more here than chasing the last percent of yield. A 10° floor is applied regardless, because a panel flatter than that stops shedding dust when it rains, and soiling costs more yield in most of Kenya than tilt optimisation returns.

Heat is the other half of the sizing. Modules are tested at 25 °C cell temperature, and a panel in still air runs well above ambient — around +25 °C at the cell is the usual working assumption. With a design ambient of 31 °C at Mbale that puts cells near 56 °C, and at roughly 0.35%/°C the array gives up about 11% against its nameplate on exactly the bright, hot afternoons it was sized for. Mounting height and rear ventilation recover a real part of that; inverter placement matters for the same reason.

Hot, but manageable. A design ambient between 31 and 36 °C is demanding without being exotic: standard equipment will usually cope, provided the installation does not fight it. Most of the trouble we are called to at this temperature is not the machine — it is the space around it. Recirculated hot discharge air, an undersized louvre, or plant boxed into a corner will defeat a correctly specified installation on the days it matters most.

What this does to a solar array. PV modules lose output as they heat up — roughly 0.3–0.4% per °C above their 25 °C test condition, and a panel in still air runs well above ambient. With 31 °C design ambient at Mbale, array sizing based on nameplate watts will overpromise on exactly the bright, hot afternoons you sized it for. Mounting height and rear ventilation are not cosmetic details here; they recover real yield. Inverters derate on their own heat too, which is why enclosure placement matters as much as inverter brand.

Load profile. Vihiga sits in the middle band for population, where demand is concentrated in a handful of towns rather than spread evenly. In practice that means standby duty for institutions and commercial premises, where the machine sits idle for weeks and then has to start and take load without argument — which makes exercise regime and battery condition matter more than peak-output arguments.

Getting there. Mbale lies about 288 km north-west of our Embakasi, Nairobi workshop in a straight line — road distance is longer. Our mobile workshop covers all 47 counties, so visits here are planned rather than improvised — we confirm the fault description in advance so the right parts travel with the engineer.

How to read these figures. Altitude and temperature are for Mbale, the Vihiga County headquarters — counties span wide ranges, so these are county reference points, not your site values. The figures derived from them are planning indications, not a substitute for a site survey and measured readings. Elevation: GeoNames, via the Open-Meteo Geocoding API. Temperature: Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis, 2025 daily maxima. Both CC BY 4.0, retrieved 2026-08-08.

Solar Installation in Vihiga: how the job is sequenced

Commissioning in the order that prevents rework. Most of the failures we are called back to fix are decisions made — or skipped — in these first phases.

1. Energy audit & target
  • Quantify load profile and offset goal.
  • 12-month utility bill review
  • kWh / kVAh seasonal pattern
2. Solar resource assessment
  • Estimate generation defensibly.
  • NASA POWER / Solargis pull
  • Shading study (sun-path / drone)
3. System design
  • Match generation to load with margin.
  • Module count and string layout
  • Inverter sizing 1.0–1.3 DC/AC
4. Structural & permit
  • Roof loads documented; statutory approvals lodged.
  • Roof-load calculation per BS EN 1991
  • EPRA permit (Kenya)
