Motor Maintenance in Lamu

What 14 m does to a frame size. IEC 60034-1 rates a motor for installation up to 1,000 m. Lamu is within that datum, so elevation costs nothing here — which makes ambient temperature and voltage quality the things that decide winding life in Lamu.

And what 32.8 °C does to the rewind. The rating datum is a 40 °C ambient, leaving about 7.2 °C of headroom at Lamu before the motor generates any heat of its own. Insulation life is governed by temperature and the accepted rule is that every 10 °C of sustained overtemperature halves it, so at this ambient the insulation class and the cooling arrangement decide how long a rewind lasts far more than the winding wire does. Voltage imbalance compounds it: a few percent of imbalance produces a disproportionate rise in rotor heating, and on a site already short of thermal headroom that is what turns a rewind into a repeat rewind.

Marine air. On the low-lying coastal strip of Lamu, salt-laden air attacks a generator continuously whether or not it is running. Standard enclosures corrode from the inside out, alternator windings and control-panel terminations suffer first, and the damage is usually well advanced before it becomes visible. Marine-grade or upgraded enclosure treatment, sealed terminations and a shortened inspection interval are not optional extras at this exposure.

Hot, but manageable. A design ambient between 31 and 36 °C is demanding without being exotic: standard equipment will usually cope, provided the installation does not fight it. Most of the trouble we are called to at this temperature is not the machine — it is the space around it. Recirculated hot discharge air, an undersized louvre, or plant boxed into a corner will defeat a correctly specified installation on the days it matters most.

Load profile. Lamu is a smaller county, and the realistic constraint is usually parts and attendance rather than capacity. Standardising on a well-supported engine family matters more here than squeezing the last percent out of a sizing calculation — a set you can get filters and a fuel pump for is worth more than a marginally better one you cannot.
