An array is sized by where the sun is and how hot the modules get, not by the watts printed on them. Kitui County sits at 1.4°S, which fixes the tilt and the direction the array must face, and its design ambient decides how much of the nameplate survives a hot afternoon.
Where the sun is decides the geometry. Kitui County lies at 1.4°S, so a fixed array here wants about 10° of tilt facing true north. That direction is not a convention, it is which side of the equator you are on, and it reverses between counties in this country. An array laid out to the wrong side of the roof loses far more than a few degrees of tilt error. A 10° floor is applied regardless, because a panel flatter than that stops shedding dust when it rains, and soiling costs more yield in most of Kenya than tilt optimisation returns.
Heat is the other half of the sizing. Modules are tested at 25 °C cell temperature, and a panel in still air runs well above ambient — around +25 °C at the cell is the usual working assumption. With a design ambient of 30.7 °C at Kitui that puts cells near 55.7 °C, and at roughly 0.35%/°C the array gives up about 11% against its nameplate on exactly the bright, hot afternoons it was sized for. Mounting height and rear ventilation recover a real part of that; inverter placement matters for the same reason.
Moderately warm. At 30.7 °C design ambient the thermal penalty is modest — roughly 2.3% — and standard radiator packages have margin in hand. What deserves attention instead is the gap between the 27.2 °C typical day and the 32.5 °C peak: an installation sized for the average will be the one that trips on the hottest afternoon of the year, which is usually also the afternoon you most needed it.
Load profile. With over a million residents, Kitui carries a real mix — commercial premises, institutions and light industry — and the sets we are asked about here are usually replacements rather than first installations. That changes the question: the existing cable, transfer switch and foundation usually constrain the answer more than the load calculation does, and surveying what is already there is worth more than a catalogue.
Getting there. Kitui lies about 122 km east of our Embakasi, Nairobi workshop in a straight line — road distance is longer. Our mobile workshop covers all 47 counties, so this is comfortably within routine call-out range for service and breakdown attendance.
How to read these figures. Altitude and temperature are for Kitui, the Kitui County headquarters — counties span wide ranges, so these are county reference points, not your site values. The figures derived from them are planning indications, not a substitute for a site survey and measured readings. Elevation: GeoNames, via the Open-Meteo Geocoding API. Temperature: Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis, 2025 daily maxima. Both CC BY 4.0, retrieved 2026-08-08.
What gets checked and when. Intervals are the manufacturer's baseline; dust, load and duty on your site shorten them rather than lengthen them.

We have not yet published a project in this discipline, and we are not going to dress up work in another one as if we had. What follows is documented power work for named clients, so you can judge the standard, the reporting and the people. The same engineers do this work.
