An array is sized by where the sun is and how hot the modules get, not by the watts printed on them. Bungoma County sits at 0.6°N, which fixes the tilt and the direction the array must face, and its design ambient decides how much of the nameplate survives a hot afternoon.
Where the sun is decides the geometry. Bungoma County lies at 0.6°N, so a fixed array here wants about 10° of tilt facing true south. That direction is not a convention, it is which side of the equator you are on, and it reverses between counties in this country. An array laid out to the wrong side of the roof loses far more than a few degrees of tilt error. A 10° floor is applied regardless, because a panel flatter than that stops shedding dust when it rains, and soiling costs more yield in most of Kenya than tilt optimisation returns.
Heat is the other half of the sizing. Modules are tested at 25 °C cell temperature, and a panel in still air runs well above ambient — around +25 °C at the cell is the usual working assumption. With a design ambient of 32.9 °C at Bungoma that puts cells near 57.9 °C, and at roughly 0.35%/°C the array gives up about 12% against its nameplate on exactly the bright, hot afternoons it was sized for. Mounting height and rear ventilation recover a real part of that; inverter placement matters for the same reason.
Hot-day margin. With 2025 reaching 35 °C at Bungoma, the worst day matters more than the average one — and it is the worst day that equipment is judged on. Whatever is installed here, the room it sits in decides whether it holds its rating: plant that is correctly sized but poorly ventilated protects itself by backing off, regardless of what the rating plate says.
Hot, but manageable. A design ambient between 31 and 36 °C is demanding without being exotic: standard equipment will usually cope, provided the installation does not fight it. Most of the trouble we are called to at this temperature is not the machine — it is the space around it. Recirculated hot discharge air, an undersized louvre, or plant boxed into a corner will defeat a correctly specified installation on the days it matters most.
Load profile. With over a million residents, Bungoma carries a real mix — commercial premises, institutions and light industry — and the sets we are asked about here are usually replacements rather than first installations. That changes the question: the existing cable, transfer switch and foundation usually constrain the answer more than the load calculation does, and surveying what is already there is worth more than a catalogue.
Getting there. Bungoma lies about 334 km north-west of our Embakasi, Nairobi workshop in a straight line — road distance is longer. Our mobile workshop covers all 47 counties, so visits here are planned rather than improvised — we confirm the fault description in advance so the right parts travel with the engineer.
How to read these figures. Altitude and temperature are for Bungoma, the Bungoma County headquarters — counties span wide ranges, so these are county reference points, not your site values. The figures derived from them are planning indications, not a substitute for a site survey and measured readings. Elevation: GeoNames, via the Open-Meteo Geocoding API. Temperature: Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis, 2025 daily maxima. Both CC BY 4.0, retrieved 2026-08-08.
Specifying by part number rather than description is the difference between a part that fits and a part that nearly fits.

We have not yet published a project in this discipline, and we are not going to dress up work in another one as if we had. What follows is documented power work for named clients, so you can judge the standard, the reporting and the people. The same engineers do this work.
