The diagnostic order our engineers work through on site. Each of these is a distinct failure with a distinct first check — guessing between them is what turns a two-hour visit into a two-day one.

Low water pressure — finding where it is lostroutine

• Fit a gauge near the supply and read static pressure with everything closed, then running pressure with one tap fully open. A large gap points to a restriction, not a supply problem.
• Time a bucket fill at a fully open tap to get actual flow in litres per minute, and compare it against what the fixture needs. Pressure and flow are different problems with different fixes.
• Test at several fixtures. One bad outlet is an aerator, a service valve or a collapsed flexible hose; every outlet poor points upstream to the main, the storage, the pump or the meter.

Concealed leak — locating before breaking anythingurgent

• Close every outlet and watch the meter. Movement with nothing open is a leak on the system, and that test costs nothing.
• Isolate section by section using the isolating valves, repeating the meter test after each, to narrow the leak to a branch before opening any surface.
• Look for the secondary evidence — a warm patch on a floor over a hot run, staining, efflorescence, a section of ground that stays damp.

Water hammer and pipe noiseroutine

• Identify which outlet triggers it — a solenoid valve, a lever tap or a float valve slamming shut is almost always the source.
• Check pipe supports and clips along the run; unsupported pipework converts the pressure wave into movement and noise.
• Fit arrestors close to the offending valve rather than at the far end of the run.

Blocked drain — clearing without damaging the pipeurgent

• Establish how much of the system is affected. One fixture is a local blockage; several is a blockage downstream of all of them.
• Open the nearest rodding eye or gully and work from the access point rather than through the fixture.
• Rod or jet at a pressure the pipe material tolerates — uPVC and old earthenware do not take the same treatment.
