The answer depends on motor age, failure cause, and criticality. Here's the decision framework.
Rewinding (Repair)
Cost: KES 200-400K depending on motor size (5-30 kW)
Process: Strip old windings. Inspect core for damage. Install new copper windings. Test performance.
Timeline: 3-7 days
Reliability after: 90-95% (new windings, but core may be aged)
New Motor
Cost: KES 500-1.5M depending on power and efficiency class
Advantage: Latest efficiency standards (saves 10-15% energy vs 15-year-old motors)

Decision Framework
REWIND IF:
- Motor is less than 10 years old
- Failure was electrical (winding burn-out) only
- Core shows no heat damage
- Budget is tight (rewinding is 50% the cost)
- Motor will be retired in 3-5 years anyway
REPLACE IF:
- Motor is 15+ years old
- Core or bearing damage exists (not just windings)
- Motor is mission-critical (downtime = high cost)
- Efficiency upgrade saves money over time
- You need warranty protection
- Multiple failures in past 5 years
